The Lord's Prayer

MZ reciting The Lord's Prayer. We are starting a new series of verses on the helping the poor. I received a nice packet of verses from Compassion Intl. So all the work is done for me! We sponsor a sweet little girl named Merlyn from San Jose.

CZ saying the 10 commandments. Of course it's a joy and rewarding to hear the boys reciting scripture passages- however, before we begin our scripture memory time we pray that God would take these verses from their mind into their heart that it may bear fruit in their lives. Knowledge puffs up but love builds up.

Scripture memory for children

Last summer I posted different activities I did with my kiddos. I started a new one a few months ago on scripture memory. After feeling burdened to actively help my children learn God's word and being inspired by my sister-in-law who is passionate about teaching her children God's truth, I came up with a plan we do atleast three times a week. I've had a blast with this so I thought I would share it with my blogger friends!

We first started learning the Ten Commandments. I chose a kid version that was very close to the actual scripture. After printing it out I helped my 5 and 3 year old cut out a "tablet" out of paper and then we glued on the commandments. We took a new one each day and then reviewed the older ones. I used bean bags that we tossed back and forth as we said each commandment. I can't believe how quickly they got it. We talked about each one so they knew what it meant. It was so neat that weeks later my three year old pointed out 2 commandments in the context of our every day lives where a commandment had been broken. (Example for you curious minds that ask...okay, so, which one did you break?!? JZ said oh, I really would like...something a friend had... a MZ said that you shouldn't do that, it would be breaking the commandment on stealing. Then I talked to him that it would actually be coveting.) But, anways, isn't that the whole point of memorizing scripture so we can take it and apply it to our lives!!
Today we just finished the 3rd verse of Psalm 93. We do lots of hand motions that fit the verse...I just make it up as I go! But, we made scrolls for this. I printed out the verse on regular paper and then we attached dowels to both ends of the paper and I helped them roll it up from both ends. We tied it with twine. That was exciting for them. But, then I got a hair-brained idea to make it really look old fashioned by giving the edges a burnt look. My husband was very disturbed that I would do this in the house...especially when it stunk up the whole kitchen. The boys were very intrigued by the fire. I did tell them it would have been a better idea to do this outside (and added only with an adult!)

We do the verse portion for about 10 minutes and then we sing songs that are scripture. Like, Proverbs 3:5-6, Romans 16:19, 1 John 4:7-8. I also am teaching them the books of the bible song. It takes us 20 minutes total. But, what a sense of time well spent when we are done!!! That feeling is priceless.

Baby Z crawling!

What a big boy he is now! I can't believe he is 10 month's old now. All of a sudden he just went to being a big boy and started eating table food last week, started crawling 2 weeks ago and pulling up on things last week. Last night was his last time of nursing! I've held off for a couple of weeks but just knew he wasn't getting much of anything! My milk supply has dropped a lot since he was about 4 months old and we've been supplementing with formula in his cereal. Now that he is doing really good on a sippy cup I felt it was time. Sad but I am ready. He is doing just fine with letting it go.

Love those smiles!
